Funeral services for Matthew William Ansier, 18, and Joseph “Joe” Garner Elmore, 19, were held Monday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Friends and family members gathered to honor the Leander High School graduates, who died Jan. 25 in an early morning car crash in San Angelo.
A viewing was held Beck Funeral Home in Cedar Park on Sunday before the services. The two young men were students at Angelo State University and Ansier was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Deborrah Hebert, ASU dean of student life, said the university holds a memorial service each year to honor anyone associated with the school who died during the past year. The annual service is scheduled for the last week in April and Hebert said Ansier and Elmore will be honored this year and their name will be placed on a plaque in the student union.
In addition, Hebert said the student body is organizing a memorial specifically for Ansier and Elmore to be held sometime in mid-February. Counseling services are available through the university, Hebert said, to help anyone close to Ansier and Elmore with the grieving process.
Ansier and Elmore died in a single-vehicle car accident in which the San Angelo Police Department said the driver, Ansier, missed a turn on South Concho Park Drive then ran off the road and into the South Concho River at approximately 1:45 a.m. Elmore was quickly removed from the purple Mercury Cougar, found upside down in the river, and taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Emergency personnel were unable to get Ansier from the car until approximately 3 a.m. SAPD said the the autopsy results will not be available for several weeks.
