The Vista Ridge chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) plans to create a local blue ribbon panel of experts to help inform and guide their efforts to prevent youth violence.
The FCCLA members invite parents, community members, teachers and student organizations to attend the first planning meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The meeting will be held in Anita Martin's room, C419 at Vista Ridge High School.
“Young people are important in helping to prevent youth violence,” say FCCLA members Cara Coats, Derrick Hopkins, Angela Dinoto and Chrysta Bullock. “That's why our chapter is part of the FCCLA national program, STOP the Violence - Students Taking on Prevention. Our main focus on this project will include the topic of dating violence. We are working with teachers from Vista Ridge High School, to set up presentations and discuss dating violence with all freshmen students. We would like this to become an ongoing project for years to come.”
The Vista Ridge FCCLA chapter recently took a “local snapshot” of youth violence, gathering information from local law enforcement, school, juvenile justice and social services agencies, as well as students, parents and community leaders. The snapshot reveals that local young people observe or experience peer violence - from grade-school bullies to hallway fights and more - on a regular basis.
