The Cedar Park Public Library received a Community Relation Grant of $1,500 from Target to fund the library's Early Children's Reading Program beginning in November.

The library's Early Reading and Storytime Performance Program uses the arts to introduce young children to reading. Through selected books and supported with learning skills through storytellers, dramatists, illustrators and performers, the program stimulates and inspires creative learning through written and live art. This program fosters the love of reading in children ages 3 to 4 years and is offered at no charge to the public beginning Saturday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m., at the library, 550 Discovery Blvd., Cedar Park.

The program provides a nurturing and fun environment for very young children to develop oral language skills and initial levels of phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, invented spelling, vocabulary knowledge and print concepts through imaginative and dramatic play, literature, music, art and movement. Social, cognitive and physical development are strengthened through the language, expressiveness, creativity, mathematics, discovery and exploration intrinsic to the performing arts, challenging and educating each child in a uniquely charged matter. This creates the foundation for learning skills children need to succeed in their future school's various curriculum areas with enthusiasm.

The Target Charitable Contribution award is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts and safe families and communities. Today that translates to $3 million every week.

The Cedar Park Public Library is proud to receive funding to provide this program that benefits the public and endorses early reading skill incentives.
