Not even Tuesday's cold weather could stop the Cedar Park softball team in its season-opener against Marble Falls, with the Lady Timberwolves picking up a 4-2 win.
Cedar Park (1-0) broke open a 2-2 game with a two-run sixth inning, with Stephanie Raesz hitting a two-out triple to score Allison Garrett. Raesz (2-for-3, double, triple, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs) later scored on a RBI single by Kara Stanley.
“This was a good start for us and we were glad to get the first game in the books,” said Cedar Park coach Cami Jenschke.
Starting pitcher Mackenzi Lofton went four innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Reliever Kate Mayfield pitched three hitless innings with four strikeouts to get the win.
Leilani Montalvo and Mayfield also had singles on offense.
Cedar Park heads on the road this weekend for the Brenham Tournament.
New Braunfels Canyon 9, Vista Ridge 4
In a rematch of last year's Region IV quarterfinals, New Braunfels Canyon took advantage of five errors for eight unearned runs to hand Vista Ridge a five-run loss.
Vista Ridge (0-1) trailed 8-0 going into the bottom of the third, but scored four times to cut the deficit in half.
Coralee Ramirez and Nikki Goff each had RBI groundouts in the inning.
Taylor Thom finished 2-for-3 to pace the offense.
Nikki Hendricks struck out four and gave up four hits in four-plus innings of relief.
The Lady Rangers will play this weekend in the Bryan/ College Station Tournament.
