Major structure fires have struck in all parts of the Leander ISD area within the last three weeks, destroying beautiful homes and sending fire departments scrambling.

A Leander woodworking shop was damaged last week, a River Place home the week before that and this week a Steiner Ranch home and another in Riviera Springs in Cedar Park felt the wrath. For Riviera Springs, it was the third house fire on Cannes Drive this calendar year

Fire destroyed a two-story residence at 4323 Cowden Drive in Steiner Ranch on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The fire started on the deck in the back of the house, and spread to the attic. It was one of several devastating structure fires in the Hill Country News area this week.

Hudson Bend firefighters arrived on the scene in the Steiner Ranch area around 3:15 p.m. and found fire on the outside of the house. Firefighters entered the structure, looking for other possible hot spots and discovered fire in the attic.

The fire assumed a defensive attack and a second alarm was requested for heavy fire throughout the roof. Strong winds directly in line with the fire and the home caused the fire to rapidly spread.

Winds were estimated to be 20 mph to 25 mph at the time of the fire. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. Investigators stated the home was destroyed.

No one was home when firefighters arrived and there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

A fire also broke out in a home on Riviera Springs in Cedar Park on Monday afternoon, Feb. 25, destroying part of the house. According to Cedar Park firefighters, it was the third fire on the Cannes Drive block in Riviera Springs in 2008. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Other recent structure fires include the Feb. 19 incident that damaged Austin Wood Works cabinetry shop in the 13000 block of FM 2243 in Leander, the Feb. 14 fire that destroyed a home in the 4200 block of Canoas Drive in River Place, and the Dec. 26 incident that destroyed the almost-finished new clubhouse at the University of Texas Golf Club in Steiner Ranch. Also this week, a fire damaged a home in Liberty Hill.
