Leander ISD track teams run away for big results

All three Leander ISD high school track teams had a nice haul of medals in track meets last weekend, including team wins by the Cedar Park and Leander boys.

The Cedar Park boys won the Don Shelton Relays at Hays with 173 points, winning five events and getting six runner up efforts.

Getting individual wins were Miles Kirk in the 400 (50.15 seconds); Parker Stinson in the 1,600 (4:19.46) and Bobby McIllece in the 3,200 (9:55.00).

The 800 and 1,600-meter relays also cruised to strong wins.

Notable second place efforts came from Hunter Dixon in the 200 (11.22), Michael Damron in the discus (141 feet, 3 inches) and Darren Thornhill in the long jump (20-3, 3/4).

The girls team finished second at Hays, winning five events and adding four seconds.

Heather Canizales had two of those wins in the 1,600 (5:37.82) and 3,200 (12:13.00), while Cassie Heffernan led the 400-meter relay to a win (50.50).

The Leander boys' team got its team win at the Dripping Springs Relays, winning with 118 points.

Overall, the team won five events and swept all three relays.

The 400 relay team (D'Angelo Bishop, Bryce Elarms, Nekechie Miller, Daniel Ruiz) won with a time of 43.18, with the 800 relay (Doug Kelley, Nick Page, Elarms, Bishop) winning with a time of 1:29.56. The 1,600 relay team (Doug Kelley, Jon Kelley, Elarms, Page) won with a time of 3:21.46.

Doug Kelley also won the 400 (48.67), while Page added a win in the 200 (22.40).

The top finish for the Leander girls came from Chimoa Duru in the 100 (third, 12.70).

Rounding out the results was Vista Ridge, as the boys' and girls' teams each finished second at the Connally Relays.

The Lady Rangers had 11 top-three finishes, including a pair of wins by Ashley Isham.

Isham won the 3,200 (11:03.53) and the 1,600 (5:03.73).

Notable second place efforts came from: Angela Gash in the long jump (17-6 1/2); Carrie Hahn in the high jump (5-4); Jessica Guest in the 800 (2:25.21) and Kaleigh Frazier in the 100 (12.70).

The Rangers (97 points) had eight top-three finishes overall, getting a win in the 3,200 by Zach Ornelas (9:39.14).

Strong second place efforts came from: Logan Shaffer in the pole vault (13-6) and Andre Sanders in the 110 (14.92) and 300 hurdles (39.87).
