Lady Lions tied for first in District 14-5A
Leander clinched a postseason berth on Thursday night, with a 4-0 win over cross-town rival Cedar Park.
Leander (8-4 in 14-5A, 16-7) is now tied with Westwood and Round Rock for first place with just two games remaining.
“We've got one of our goals out of the way by getting a playoff spot,” said Leander coach Faye Fregia. “Cedar Park made us earn it, I knew this was going to be a tough game.”
Cedar Park (4-8 in 14-5A, 11-12) saw its playoff hopes take a hit with the loss, as they trail fourth place Stony Point by two games with two to play.
“This was a game we needed to have,” said Cedar Park coach Cami Jenschke. “I thought we had good swings and had a good approach, but just hit it right at them.”
Leander grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a steal of home by Alyssa Barry.
Three more runs came across in the third inning, powered by RBI singles from Sierra Larson and Aissa Barrera.
The 4-0 edge was more than enough for pitcher Lauren Derting, allowing three hits and striking out six for the win.
Cedar Park starter Mackenzi Loftin was knocked out in the third inning, with Kate Mayfield (four strikeouts) tossing three-plus innings of scoreless relief.
Vista Ridge 5, Dripping Springs 0
Sophomore pitcher Nikki Hendricks threw a one-hitter, while Allie Geiser and Taylor Thom had big offensive games as Vista Ridge claimed a shutout win over first place Dripping Springs.
Vista Ridge (10-2 in 25-4A, 23-4) saw Geisler hit a three-run home run to power a three-run fourth inning. Thom added a pair of doubles with two runs scoring for the Lady Rangers.
