Election Day is Saturday, May 10, for the 2008 Leander ISD school board election. Early voting wrapped up May 6. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, as candidates seek two open spots on the board.

Polling places can be found on the Williamson County and Travis County websites: www. wilcogov.org/elections/index.html, and www.co.travis.tx.us/county _clerk/election/.

Seeking reelection are incumbents Place 6 candidate Jim Sneeringer, a software developer who is currently board president, and Place 7 candidate Pam Waggoner, who owns an insurance business. Waggoner recently won the Republican primary for Texas House District 48 in Travis County. She will face incumbent Donna Howard in the November general election. If she wins, Waggoner will vacate her board seat in January.

Challenging Sneeringer for Place 6 will be Nathan Deckinga, a database administrator who has lived in LISD for nine years.

Three candidates are challenging Waggoner for Place 7. These include small business owner Bryan Martin, a three-year LISD resident; computer consultant D.R. Dadey; and IBM product manager Will Streit.

First-time voters in Travis County who registered to vote by mail and did not previously provide a copy of ID, must show a form of ID other than a Voter Registration Certificate before voting.

" While considering the current school board race. Leander ISD is in excellent shape socioeconomically vs. other Region 13 public school districts. We have an excellent teacher base. We have excellent parent volunteer support and hours vs. other public school districts in the region. Eanes ISD and Round Rock ISD each had "Recognized" High Schools (Westlake and Westwood) in the most recent 2007 Texas Education Agency Accountability Ratings. Leander ISD, despite it's claims of an "excellent, college-bound culture" in our high schools had none, zip, nada. Considering our resources, what's happened with LISD achieving at the level it coulda, shoulda, woulda attain? "
