Leander council hears deep water intake study results

The deep water intake evaluation study circuit made its way to Leander City Council meeting last Thursday. Representatives from Carter Burgess Jacobs presented the council the same thing that's already been shown to Cedar Park - a consolidated shaft tunnel (CST) at site #4 would be the best option for cost and the least community impact.
That and the council's vote on the PEC Board of Directors took up the bulk of the meeting that adjourned with punch and cookies for the soldiers from Fort Hood who showed up.
The meeting actually began 11 minutes late because the council waited for the soldiers to arrive. Major Michael Best of the 3-4 AVD Black Hawk group led the Pledge of Allegiance for the second time in two months.
“Our guys are ready to go and we appreciate all this support given by the city,” said Best, whose brigade is leaving for Iraq this month.
Council votes on PEC members
The city of Leander has a total of 80 votes for the Pedernales Electric Cooperative Board of Directors, and the council put them to a vote last Thursday. PEC District 3 candidate Jerry Rose spoke to the council and asked for its vote prior to the council making any decisions.
Place 3 Councilmember John Perez made a motion to select a set of candidates he has already committed to. Mayor John Cowman seconded the motion. The council voted against the straight ticket, 5-2, with Cowman and Perez casting the dissenting votes.
The council then agreed to vote district by district. Place 4 Councilmember Michell Cantwell made a motion to select James E. Williams for District 2, and it passed by a 4-3 margin.
Perez motioned for Rose as District 3 director, and that motion, too, passed by a 4-3 vote.
The council selected Sandra Tenorio (District 7) with a 5-2 vote, D.L. Ruff (District 5) by a 5-2 vote and David Bethancourt (District 6) by a 6-1 vote.
Bus stop for apartments
Melinda Garrison spoke during citizens communications to ask for a Capital Metro bus stop halfway between Lakeline Apartments and Cedar Ridge Apartments. She said most of the tenants in these apartments are affordable housing applicants and have started a petition to get a bus stop.
“The closest bus stop to them is three and a half miles away with very little sidewalk access,” Garrison said.
