Expo to focus on kids' health

D.R. Steuerwald thinks it is important to not only take from the community, but also give back to it. He plans to do just that this Saturday at the first Children's Health and Wellness Expo, which he masterminded.

Steuerwald, a chiropractor with Cedar Park Tech Chiropractic clinic, said he got the idea of a children's wellness expo from a friend in New Jersey who is a leading pediatric chiropractor. “I thought it was a very good idea, and thought one day I will do it,” he said.

After meeting with Butch Aggen, owner of the Goddard School of Cedar Park, Steuerwald proposed the idea.

“Steuerwald initially approached me about the idea of hosting it in the gym at the school,” Aggen said. “The theme would focus on wellness and health specifically for children.”

Steuerwald said his main goal for the expo is to help kids in Cedar Park to not grow up with the same problems their parents did and to make parents aware of different issues.

“This expo is targeted for parents with young children or those expecting,” said Aggen.

Participants can visit with a pediatrician, dentist, orthodontist, family nutritionist and child psychotherapist, to name a few.

“Anything that you could look at me and ask ‘What about this for kids?' they're there,” said Steuerwald, in reference to what topics are represented.

The expo, which will be held at the gymnasium at the Goddard School of Cedar Park, will have seminars on many topics including how to handle child separation anxiety, challenges of potty training and handling the arrival of a new baby.

Dr. Sohail Azadi will also be on hand to talk about sun safety for kids and myths about vaccinations.

“This is a multi-faceted and multi-disciplined approach,” Steuerwald said.

Activities for kids are also available at the expo, said Aggen. The Cedar Park Fire Department is bringing a truck and fire personnel and Peak Performance Martial Arts will being doing young child demonstrations, he said. Usborne readers will also have story time.

“Abrakadoodle [also] graciously donated two hours of their time to do young children's art education,” Aggen said. “They'll have child-friendly fun activities going on.”

There has already been an overwhelming response and organizers have had to turn away vendors. “I'm afraid that we might have a better response than what we planned for,” Steuerwald said.

The Children's Health and Wellness Expo is slated for Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goddard School of Cedar Park located at the intersection of El Salido Parkway and Cypress Creek Parkway.
