Summer track clubs set for TAAF, AAU finals

While some athletes spent the summer gearing up for sports in the coming school year, the Texas Thunder and CP Classic summer track teams are already preparing for the TAAF Games of Texas and the AAU Junior Olympics in the coming weeks.

Texas Thunder qualified 18 athletes for the Junior Olympic Games to be held from July 28 to Aug. 2 at Eastern Michigan University in Detroit, Mich. Thirty-six more athletes from Texas Thunder will be in the running at the Games of Texas, which started yesterday and will run through Sunday in San Antonio.

CP Classic will also have a strong showing at the Junior Olympics, as a record 27 athletes from the club will be participating in 47 different events.

Of the 27 athletes advancing for CP Classic, 11 of those won events with three athletes winning twice - Marissa Lee, Ashley Isham and Taylor Dayton.

Lee won the girls' Intermediate 1,500 with a time of 5-minutes, 5.12 seconds, while adding a win in the 3,000 with a time of 11:26.88. Isham got her wins in the Young Women division for the 2,000 steeplechase (7:20.97) and 3,000 meters (10:49.70), while Dayton won in the Young Men division in the 1,500 (4:18.90) and 3,000 (9:31.46) meter runs.

Also advancing for CP Classic were Kristen Jones, Denise Devlyn, Ian Schoeplein, Paige Welch, Sydney Reuter, Jeremy Brown, Mario Reyes, Andrew Stefani, Logan Thomas, Brandon Keys, Oliver Gunter, Jesse Attaway, Sophia Yousefi, Aspen Scott, Matthew Budde, Alex Bundy, Jesse Devlyn, Skylar Liner, Brandon Keys and Olivia Ornelas.

As for Texas Thunder, advancing to the Junior Olympics for the boys are J.P. Coward, Ronald Jones, Ryan Lemmons, David Mortiz, Joey Carter, Tresean Artis, Cole Gauther, John West, Theodore Evans, Zach Santiago and Andre Sanders.

AAU qualifiers for the girls include Nandhi Brown, Helen Roddy, Kara Diclemente, Lauren West, Whitney Hoermann, Peyton Ramsey, Maja Dunn and Lacie Jones.

Advancing to the Games of Texas for the Texas Thunder boys are TreSean Artis, Carl Austin, J.P. Coward, Kyle DiClemente, Christopher Hendricks, Ronald Jones, Ryan Lemmons, Will Lipscomb, David Mortis, Andre Sanders, Zach Santiago, John West Jr., Jared Britton, Joey Carter, Myles Cheatu, Sachin Desai and Cole Gauthier

Advancing for the Texas Thunder girls are Tyler Andrews, Nandhi Brown, Molly Coward, Kara DiClemente, Niaya Gadison, Whitney Hoermann, Khashauna Jones, Malynda Jones, Jenna Lipscomb, Brooke Owen, Raven Pierotti, Peyton Ramsey, Olivia Ruggieri, Lauren West, Tristan Smith, Maja Dunn, Laney Hoermann, Helen Roddy and Megan Thurman.
