The Concordia men's soccer team scored early against Huston-Tillotson on Friday evening in their season opener, but that wasn't enough as they lost a 3-1 decision at St. Francis Field at Huston-Tillotson.
The Tornadoes scored within the first five minutes as sophomore Jay Shaffer found the net by sailing a shot to the right corner for a short-lived 1-0 edge.
Huston-Tillotson picked up their first goal at the end of the first half to knot the match at 1-1. Concordia had a couple of scoring chances late in the opening half, but couldn't get past Huston-Tillotson's goalie Marcos Sanchez (who stopped six of Concordia's attacks).
Tornado sophomore goalie Eric Davis played well in the opener, stopping nine shots in the match.
The difference in the match was two late penalty kicks by Erwin Madrid in the second half, giving Huston-Tillotson the 3-1 advantage.
Concordia plays at 4:30 p.m. today at The University of Dallas. Concordia's home opener is 1 p.m. on Saturday against Austin College.
