HURRICANE IKE: How you can volunteer
Print this story | Email this story
The American Red Cross of Central Texas and the City of Austin will open the Volunteer Resource Center (VRC) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday to process volunteers who want to help with the response to Hurricane Ike. Austin is receiving large numbers of evacuees and new volunteers may be asked to work in the evacuation centers or in other roles during the operation.
The VRC is located at the Northwest Hills Recreation Center at 2913 Northland Drive in Austin. Those wishing to volunteer are asked to visit www.centex.redcross.org to fill out a volunteer application and request a background check in order to expedite the process of volunteering. Volunteers must then report to the Resource Center for training, credentialing and scheduling. Those without computer access are encouraged to go directly to the VRC for assistance in applying and training for volunteer opportunities.
Through this and all its efforts, the American Red Cross of Central Texas is taking all necessary action to prepare for any possible disaster response to Hurricane Ike.
The best way to help the response effort is with a financial contribution to the local Red Cross chapter. Central Texans who wish to make a financial contribution to the American Red Cross of Central Texas can call 800 or 512-928-4271, send a financial contribution to 2218 Pershing Drive, Austin, 78723 or make a secure on-line donation at www.centex.redcross.org.
