HURRICANE IKE: Rouse used as only shelter now
Print this story | Email this story
As of 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the numbers of evacuees remaining at Leander ISD's three shelter locations had decreased to where these operations could be collapsed to a single sheltering site - Rouse High School. Approximately 400 evacuees - most from Galveston and others areas where returning to their homes is still not an option - were led to the new shelter and welcomed with water and snacks.
Rouse High School was selected by the emergency management team due to the setup of the building - allowing continuing separation of sheltered guests and students. This selection allows for minimal disruption to teaching and learning, in case sheltering activities continue over several school days.
The shelter at Rouse High School will be managed by other LISD administrators, so that RHS' administrators, teachers and staff may devote their full attention to their students and to the operations of their school.
LISD Superintendent Bret A. Champion continues to praise the cooperation and appreciation shown by the families staying as Leander ISD's guests since Friday. "The planning and preparation that LISD did in conjunction with the Red Cross and emergency management personnel has resulted in smooth operations at our shelters,” Champion said, “but we also must thank these Texas neighbors. They are going through tough times, and we're just glad that we have this opportunity to help see them through these challenges.”
Staff from throughout Leander ISD are assisting with the sheltering activities at Rouse High School, along with Red Cross volunteers. LISD will provide additional updates on Monday, Sept. 15th, or as conditions warrant.
