Defense team seeks second attorney for Billy Carroll

Accused sexual predator Billy Dan Carroll was back in court last week, as his court-appointed attorney asked a judge to appoint a second lawyer to help with the case. Carroll and his ex-wife also face a civil lawsuit filed last week by the family of an alleged sexual assault victim.

Carroll, a former Grandview Hills resident who once ran a successful court reporting business, is accused of sexually assaulting and videotaping at least 10 victims, including eight children between the ages of 2 and 16 and two adults. He is believed to have drugged several of his victims before sexually assaulting them.

During a hearing on Friday, attorney Bill Hines asked state District Judge Melissa Goodwin to appoint another public defender. Goodwin said she needed more time to consider the request. She did agree to appoint an investigator to work with Hines, however.

Hines also asked to review some evidence against his client. Prosecutors said they wanted a protective order to prevent some material from being released, which would prevent it from becoming public before trial.

The parents of one of Carroll's alleged victims, a 7-year-old who was friends with the Carrolls' daughter, have filed a civil suit against Billy Dan Carroll and ex-wife Katherine Lee Carroll. The lawsuit asks for damages related to the assault charge.

The suit also seeks damages from Katherine Carroll, who the family says exercised negligent supervision, failing to warn the alleged victim and her parents about potential dangers. The suit also alleges that there was a fraudulent transfer of wealth from Carroll to his wife to protect his wealth from creditors.
