LHS, VRHS earn impressive finishes
The Cedar Park High School Marching Band's beautiful music and precision footwork proved irresistible at the UIL State Marching Band Contest at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Tuesday, Nov. 4, where the band placed fourth.
Vista Ridge High School's marching band also made a great showing at the state competition, finishing 20th, giving Leander ISD two of the state's top 20 marching bands in Class 5A.
The Cedar Park band earned its berth in the state UIL competition after ranking fifth in the preliminary round.
“The students put on the performance of their lives,” said CPHS Head Band Director Steve Wessels of the band's UIL show. “I have never heard more comments from people about how this was the most amazing band and amazing performance they have ever seen and heard.”
CPHS Marching Band Director Jeremy Spicer said, “The clarity and quality of the performance, both visually and musically is what made all the difference. What we did versus the other schools really served us well. The students constantly worked hard, from the very beginning.”
The CPHS and Leander High School bands also marched in The Bands of America Super Regionals on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, at the Alamodome. The BOA event featured 51 bands from Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. Both bands made the BOA final round, with Leander placing 12th and Cedar Park placing third.
The Timberwolves' Super Regionals achievement made history, said Wessels. At preliminaries, the band competed against more than 50 bands and captured third place. The Timberwolves went on to take third in finals - the best showing the band has ever made at the contest. One judge commented, “This brought tears to my eyes. This made my trip from Los Angeles with it!”
“This year has been highly challenging and highly rewarding,” said CPHS French Horn Section Leader Alex Grounds. “From the first day of marching camp to the last hour and a half of rehearsal, hard work and dedication have been bare necessities, and in the end, it all paid off. As a band, we created something truly excellent, and I am proud to say that I was a part of it.”
