CP girls place second at Marble Falls

The Cedar Park girls' basketball team continued its strong start of the 2008 season, going 3-1 at the Marble Falls Tournament en route to a second place finish.

Cedar Park (6-1) started the tournament with a 55-54 win over McCallum and moved into the semifinals with a 67-24 thumping of Wimberley. A 61-45 win over Marble Falls put Cedar Park into the finals, which was a tough 46-44 loss at the buzzer to New Braunfels.

“This was a good tournament for us and we played well for the most part,” said Cedar Park coach Mark Myers. “But we also saw we had a lot to work on as well.”

In the tournament opener against McCallum, Kristen Florence led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Also playing well were Madison Kramr with 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, along with 12 points and nine rebounds by Maddie Wheeler.

Florence also had a solid game against Wimberley with 13 points and eight rebounds while Falyn Myers led the team in scoring with 15 points and five 3-pointers. Also playing well were Wheeler (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Cori Cummings (6 assists).

In the semifinals against Marble Falls, Lianza led the scoring with 14 points while Florence (7 rebounds) and Wheeler (6 rebounds, three 3-pointers) each added 13 points. Kramr chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, followed by eight assists from Madi Hess.

The final against New Braunfels was paced by Florence, who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Kramr added 10 rebounds, six points and five assists while Wheeler chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

Cedar Park closed out play before the holiday break on Monday night at home against Killeen Shoemaker.

Leander gains four game split at Marble Falls

Leander (3-7) closed out the Marble Falls Tournament with two straight wins, defeating Travis by a 50-27 margin and getting a 41-36 win over Reagan.

“Those wins were nice to get going into the break,” said Leander coach Jonathan Lamb. “And we continue to get better with each game.”

Leander started the tournament with a tough 39-35 loss to state power Plainview. Aissa Barrera scored 10 points in the loss, followed by six points from Casey McCauley.

The next game was a 47-36 loss to district foe Vista Ridge, with Sierra Nevels leading with 12 points and five rebounds.

Against Travis, Barrera posted 13 points and five assists while Janay Collins and Maria Parra (8 rebounds) both added eight points.

In the finale against Reagan, Ellen Giddens led with 12 points, while Barrera chipped in 11 points and five assists.

Leander played at Bowie on Monday and hosted Hendrickson on Tuesday.

Vista Ridge goes 1-3 at Marble Falls

Vista Ridge (4-6) played well in all four tournament games, but managed just one win in a 47-36 decision over Leander at the Marble Falls Tournament.

“I thought we played competitive basketball in all four games,” said Vista Ridge coach Mike Martin.

Against Leander, guard Courtney Foster scored 22 points and sank three 3-pointers, followed by 10 points from Regina Phillips and six assists from Dazarae Matthews.

Phillips also had 14 points and six rebounds in a 55-47 loss to Westlake, with Autumn Bridges adding 12 points.

Foster came back with 19 points and five assists in a 53-42 loss to Del Valle, and ended the tournament with 35 points and six rebounds in a 68-65 overtime loss to McCallum.

Uzochi Duru also played well against Del Valle (9 points, 5 rebounds) and McCallum (14 points, 8 rebounds).
