The Leander ISD Board of Trustees is seeking suggested names for two new LISD regional stadiums that will open in the coming years. Both stadium projects were approved as part of Leander ISD's 2007 school construction bond package.

The two stadium projects are:

1. A regional stadium being constructed near Lt. Matthew Vandegrift High School and Four Points Middle School, both located in Ribelin Ranch, off of FM 2222, near Tumbleweed Hill. This stadium will open in the fall of 2009.

2. A regional stadium that will open in 2010 or 2011 on district-owned land on the south side of Park Street in Cedar Park. The stadium will be located between Vista Ridge High School and LISD's new Ronald Reagan Elementary, which opens in the fall of 2009.

Leander ISD's board policy outlines the process for naming district facilities. the policy states the following:

“The Board shall have complete authority in regard to naming or renaming any facility, property, or fixture (building, annex, stadium, grove, area, fountain, scoreboard, clock, and the like). The Board may appoint a committee to study and suggest possible names.”

New LISD facilities shall be named for one of the following:

1. Historical or geographical site or communities;

2. Deceased, significant individuals;

3. Local, state, or national historical events and places;

4. Significant state or national figures; or,

5. A person who has made a significant contribution to education in the District.

LISD policy goes on to specify, “If the nominated name is a historical or geographic site, the name submitted shall be accompanied by a written rationale and/or description of the significance of the name. If the nominated name is an individual, the name submitted shall be accompanied by a written rationale and/or description of the named person's accomplishments. The nominee shall be widely respected, a person of character, and have a background of service to adults and children of Leander ISD, Texas and/or the Unites States.”

Proposed names and supporting documentation should be addressed to Dick Ellis in the School/Community Relations Office (Leander ISD, Attention: Dick Ellis, P.O. Box 218, Leander, TX 78646) or via e-mail at dick.ellis@leanderisd.org) by Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Submitted names should be accompanied by a written rationale and/or description of the significance of the name.

The LISD Board plans to adopt names for the two new stadiums in late February.
