It was a case of better late than never for the Vista Ridge girls cross country team, as they picked up one of four at-large berths for the upcoming Nike Cross Country National meet this Saturday at Portland Meadows at Portland, Oregon.

The Lady Rangers, who one the District 16-5A title, finished fourth at the Nike South Regionals held two weeks ago in The Woodlands. Both they at Kingwood Park (third at Nike South) each were given at-large berths for nationals.

"We're all very excited to have the opportunity to run at nationals," said Vista Ridge coach David Hilsenteger. "We already had two going in Ashley Isham and Amanda Russell, but it means so much more to have the entire team running."

Hilsenteger was informed Sunday afternoon of the team's selection by race officials.

Vista Ridge already had both Russell (fourth at Nike South) and Isham (fifth at Nike South) qualified for nationals after their strong individiual runs at Nike South.

The Vista Ridge girls will also be joined at nationals by Zach Ornelas, who placed fourth overall at Nike South. Ornelas, the 16-5A individual champion, was the runner-up individually at the 5A state championships on Nov. 16 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The Cedar Park boys team had also qualified for nationals at Nike South, coming in second in the boys team race.
