Seeing that shiny new bike under the tree on Christmas morning is a cherished memory for many. Unfortunately, not every family can afford that traditional gift.
This Christmas, new bicycles will go to some of the kids who need them most, thanks to Academy Sports and Outdoors of Cedar Park. The store donated 26 children's bikes this week - 13 girls' bikes and 13 boys' bikes.
The bikes were delivered to Cypress Elementary on Thursday and will be distributed to six elementaries throughout the Leander Independent School District. They will then go to families that school counselors believe could use a little help this holiday season. The bikes will come from their parents, not Academy.
“The elementary counselors got together and decided which kids at our schools could benefit from bikes,” said Cypress Elementary Counselor Tracy Noble. “The response from the parents was so appreciative. A lot of them were wondering what they were going to do for Christmas this year.”
Academy Assistant Manager Richard Castillo was proud to deliver the new bikes. “We wanted to let people know that we're there for the community,” he said. “It's exciting to see how the kids reacted when we brought the bikes into the building.”
Academy Receiving Team Leader Tony Avalos also felt happy to make an impact on local schoolchildren. “It's wonderful to be able to help those less fortunate. I know that growing up, it was important to find something under the tree with my name on it.”
