When the needles on your Christmas tree have started to turn brown there is still a way to think green: donate it to the cities of Cedar Park and Leander.
On Jan. 3, the city of Cedar Park will host its Annual Tree Recycling Program. From 9 a.m. to noon residents can bring their trees to Cedar Park City Hall. In exchange for the tree, Cedar Park will be handing out free tree seedlings (while supplies last).
From Dec. 26 to Jan. 11, the city of Leander will have a designated area in Robin Bledsoe Park to bring your trees. Anyone can come anytime and leave their tree.
Both Cedar Park and Leander require the tree be real and stripped of decorations and ornaments. Stands must also be removed.
Donated Christmas trees received will be ground into mulch. This mulch will be used in local parks and landscapes, helping the soil retain water while adding beauty to the landscapes. Donating your tree instead of disposing it also helps reduce the material in landfills.
“Last year Cedar Park ground about 500 trees into approximately 10,000 pounds of mulch” said Curt Randa, director of the Parks and Recreation Department for Cedar Park. “This saves us about $600 per year in our landscaping costs.”
