Round one of the yearly wrestling duals between Leander ISD schools kicked off last Thursday night, with Vista Ridge picking up a decisive 71-18 win over Leander.
Vista Ridge, already with impressive wins over Westlake as well as a team title at the San Antonio Churchill Tournament, led throughout and won the first 10 matches of the night.
“The kids were really fired up for the match,” said Vista Ridge coach Justin Turner. “We always want to wrestle well against Leander and I thought we did just that.”
Vista Ridge also found out before the match that they were selected to attend the State Bull Championships on Jan. 17 in Amarillo, one of the most prestigious tournaments for wrestling in Texas.
Against Leander, Vista Ridge scored eight pinfall wins in those first 10 matches. Pinfalls were scored by: Marshall Gather (pin at 2:14, 160 pounds), Hunter Fields (pin at 2:27, 171 pounds), Bradley Lane (pin at 1:06, 189 pounds), Sam Almazon (pinfall at 0:31, 215 pounds), Jon McCallum (19-4 tech fall, 285 pounds), Scott Lampi (pinfall at 1:30, 113 pounds), Cullen Martinez (pinfall at 1;36, 119 pounds) and Jake Wickman (pinfall at 3:45, 125 pounds).
The Rangers also got a pinfall win from Bryan Osorio at 140 pounds with a time of 55 seconds to round out their scoring.
Leander struggled early in the match, but picked up pinfall wins in three of its last four matches on the night.
“The kids that we expected to pull through did for us,” said Leander coach Carl Clements. “While we struggled early, I think we're starting to show signs of getting better.”
Leander picked up its first win of the night at 130 pounds, as Tyler Robertson picked up a third-round pinfall decision at 4:06.
Cody Beall then stepped up at 145 pounds, winning at the 4:44 mark of the third round. He was ahead 14-3 when he finally got the pin.
The final win of the night came from Cody Crisswell at 152 pounds, getting a pin at the 2:13 mark of the second round.
