Wild election comes to an end
Print this story | Email this story
Leander just finished its most interesting council election in memory: four run-off elections after 15 candidates originally ran for five spots.
Along the way things got wild. The candidates formed packs. It was four against four and accusations were flying. If I ever run for public office, which I won't, I will not run as part of a pack! I don't want to put myself in the position of having to stand up for what another candidate says. I believe some of the problems the challengers faced were some of the things Mark Kronkosky said, especially claims that crimes were being committed at city hall.
These accusations resulted in members of the city staff and the firefighters association refuting the information coming out of the challengers' camp. Finance Director Sharon Johnson wrote a letter to the News defending herself and her integrity. The accusations were made by Kronkosky but the whole group had to carry the load over something three of them did not say.
Leander city engineer Wayne Watts also brought the News detailed information about future water rates and debt service to be incurred by Leander to refute claims about the projected water rate increases coming from the challengers.
Another problem occurred when the challengers decided they would not attend a second candidate forum sponsored by the Greater Leander Chamber of Commerce and the Hill Country News. Two of them said in writing they would not attend because they thought the News, Editor Scott McDonald and myself would cheat by giving the questions to the incumbents before the debate.
The News' primary responsibility at the debate was to publicize the event and bring the cookies and soft drinks. Honestly, we let some of the comments get our goat and we were offended that the accusations were made.
The challengers' only reason to complain about the News' coverage occurred when we referred to them as the Old Town candidates in an article on May 14, 2009. This was a tag put on them by their opponents and we should have attributed the reference to the incumbents.
Overall, the News did a good job covering the election and we take pride in an election we put so much time into, which brought out the largest turnout ever in a Leander run-off.

Our local cities ARE NOT even offering a toilet replacement rebate.
Why? Can't afford it in the budget?
I've got an idea (but it's still an attack on someone): LET'S HAVE 6% OF US SHOW UP TO VOTE and kick these idiots out of office. It really is that simple. "

Seems to me, that all homes could be built with a valve, so that a home-owner or renter, could open the valve to let the water be used in the yard. Most detergents and other household cleaning agents are now made in ways that are not harmful to the grass or garden. I did this before and it made a huge difference in the water bill, because we did not use additional water to have a nice yard and garden.
The lack of water is becoming more and more of a reality. What happens if Lake Travis gets so low that they can't pump out water for us?
Can everyone try ot come up with solutions instead of just attacking each other? "

I can't say much about the LCRA and their management of lake levels, but know this: LCRA does not have the power or authority to MAKE IT RAIN.
Cities that THOUGHT they could rely on rain water for their population and growth: Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Tampa, Atlanta, Charlotte... ALL those efforts FAILED because of natural causes: NO RAIN (or snow)...
Our future depends upon TWO sources of water - NOT JUST ONE. The BCRUA and its supporters are wishing, hoping, daydreaming, and apparently gazing into a very cloudy crystal ball.
We will all pay the price for their folly in the future. "

I went to my favorite spot on Lake Travis last weekend. There was a time that when I parked my truck I walked only a few feet to the water. Now, it's a quarter mile trek just to find the water! There have been many 'predictions' made, especially by Parmer (i think they have a crystal ball), but know this, it doesn't take a crystal ball to know that Lake Travis might one day be dry and it might be sooner than some think.
So what are they going to do? Open the gates and let more water flow down? Are people on Applehead Island and Horseshoe Bay going to give up their constant level luxury? "

HCN did a crappy job, no doubt. No two ways about it.
I see you've ignored my challenge. You questioned my character and yet you still hide behind this blog. I've signed my name to my blogs which says I am willing to defend all that I've said. Too bad you can't say the same.
This is as bad as Carl Wake taking resposiblity for Dave Siebold's blogs. I hope it pays off for him in the next election. I think he'll find out how sticking his neck out on the line with information he couldn't have possibly known, is really going to bite him the buttocks later on. Silly, silly man.. "

Hey Larry, one question. Is it common for the "owner" of such a facility to have box seats? Would be unfortunate to spend so much energy bashing the "norm." And if Cowman and Lemon, or Cedar Park and Leander for that matter, become BFFs due to the box seats we'll all be laughing. "

Seems running as part of pack were my words. Seems that the events, meaning the stories and the strong relationships between the HCN and the incumbents were reason enough for the mistrust.
Corrections. Not only did you dub them 'old town', but you failed to get quotes from them and only printed "quotes' from the provided via the mouths of the incumbents.
i.e. Michell Cantwell said "they think they can lower the water rates by 50%". Never did that come from the mouths of the opponents.
Another mistake, you printed that Ms. Hampton "owed' John Cowman $20. Now, if we could depend of proper recording of council meetings, unlike the time 'technical difficulties' had occured when Laura Wicket tried to get the recording for the meeting regarding Winding Creek, then you might have been able to exercise accurate reporting.
You talk about how the opponents had to take responsibility for what Kronkosky said. Make no mistake, the rates are going up and would be no matter who held office. Water became a moot point, but the HCN pressed on anyhow. You make no mention of the other incumbents having to take responsibility for the horrible lies that John Cowman had spread, mainly being the one, that the whole town knows about, about Andrea Navarette. How do I know about it you might ask? John Cowman....
Now...You make no mention that the Williamson County Association of Realtors had to call for a special interview of the mayoral candidates because they were so appalled that a FELLOW Realtor, John Cowman would try and pass a Real Estate Transfer tax and they decided to endorsed Vic Villarreall instead of Cowman. You also didn't report that Cap Metro (JOHN COWMAN SITS ON CAP METRO BOARD) union guys endorsed Iris Davis.
So, when you boast about how 'fair' you are, I would think twice. There are many who will not read your paper, due to the irresponsible reporting and apparent favoritism played throughout this past election. Let's hope journalism isn't like this everywhere.
I will expect this blog just like the many others just as this will soon disappear. No worries, there are other places to blog, other newspapers to print in and websites that will gladly record the truth. "

yet, because some person by name of blondie that apparently has some real anger issues, is allowed to have a blog remain that refers to me as a sl...t and wh....re.... go figure.
And you are right, more people should have gotten involved. It's hard to compete with money provided by Crystal Falls and Grand Mesa...I guess it's true what they say...The people with the most money, always win. I wonder if that is true when we go. Seems you can't take it with you. I would rather leave behind a decent legacy and good name than tainted money....that's just the way I feel about it... "

Sorry for the repeating comment.
But, as I said, the HCN has resisted and refused to acknowledge in print the existence of the MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR LUXURY SUITE that the City of Cedar Park owns in the new Cedar Park Center. Specifics on the "Owner's Suite" (the owner of the arena is the City) is contained in the original agreement between the City and Hicks.
The LUXURY SUITE has 14 seats, comes with 7 parking passes, and will require event-related expenses when used by anyone - Mayor or guests - which will be billed to the City.
Will Mayor Lemon invite Mayor Cowman? Maybe to the first event that Mrs. Lemon would rather skip (rodeo? fake dinosaurs? who knows...)
That's part of the rub: Who's controlling the guest list, who gets to go, who's butt-buddies are on the list? Our city will need a full-time assistant just to manage the City's LUXURY SUITE.
And... this is going to go on for the next 25 years!?! "

If common-minded people were elected to our State Legislature, we'd have a law that requires an election to motivate a simple majoirty of the voters, or the election is NULL. Voter turnout in Leander set a record, and was PITIFULLY SMALL. Likewise the bond election held years ago for an arena in Cedar Park... "

First, the candidates did not form groups. The incumbents did, and said that they were opposed to the other group. So, you took the incumbents word for it, that the challengers were a group and published that mis-information.
You say that Mark caused problems with his accusations. Time will tell. For the years that I have known Mark, he has never lied to me. I cannot say that about the mayor, members of the council, or the HCN. As far as the firefighters association, Mark never mentioned it to me in all of the times that we discussed the political issues. UNTIL, he told me that Cowman had started rumors with the fire department, in order to turn them against him. Again, I am going to believe the person who has always been truthful in the past.
After the way that the HCN was printing whatever the incumbents told them, and the HCN dubbing the challengers as the Old Town group---how can you blame them for not trusting you? From the first time that I read the the terms "Old Town Group", I wondered how that came to be, as only one of the challengers lives in Old Town. Now you say that the incumbents tagged the others as Olld Town Group! As an eaditor, you didn't see any point in asking the persons involved?
I'm glad for you, that you credit yourself for the large voter turn-out. Hope your arm doesn't get strained by patting yourself on the back. Quite frankly, I would be ashamed of how the yellow journalism made your paper appear to readers. I have gone to council meetings and Planning and Zoning meetings. Then I read the HCN and have to wonder if your writers went to the same meetings. Your obligation to the readers is to report fairly and accurately. You have failed in your obligations. "
