LAGO VISTA — A Leander man took his own life last week, after taking a motorist’s cell phone at gun point and a brief stand off with the Travis County Sheriff’s office.

Robert Ryan Cleland, 43, who was on probation for a 2008 charge of injury to a child in Leander, had recently failed an alcohol test and was facing going back to prison, according to Travis County Capt.Wes Priddy. The situation began in the Lago Vista area on Sept. 10, when Cleland took a weapon from his stepfather’s home and basically said he would harm himself and possibly the police, Priddy said.

He ended up in the Point Venture area of Lake Travis and was talking to his girlfriend when his phone died, according to Priddy.

That’s when he stopped someone in a vehicle, pointed his gun at them and took their cell phone,” Priddy said.

Cleland reportedly couldn’t make the stolen phone work and went to a house of someone he knew to use their phone to talk to his girlfriend, when authorities discovered his whereabouts.

“We were trying to talk him out of making a bad decision,” Priddy said. “But after all said and done, he was determined and ended it in the fashion he did.”

Welcome to the discussion.

This "Leander man" was my ex-husband. He was (like SO VERY MANY people) stuck on a trummped up charge within "the system". He was desparate and needed help (NOT PRISON). He was backed into a corner by the law and felt his only way out was suicide. I know this because he called me that day. I can't help but wonder how many families are put through this...Protect and serve...REALLY???? R.I.P. Ryan. Although you are no longer in my life, you will ALWAYS be in my heart.
