Austin Bold FC announced that forward Promise Isaac died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack after collapsing in the gym at his apartment complex. He was 31.
Isaac represented Nigeria at the Olympics and also played in the Turkish Super Lig and Saudi Pro League before joining the Bold for their inaugural year before this season.
“The greatest loss a team can suffer is not on the scoreboard — it’s the death of a fellow teammate,” Austin Bold FC Chairman Bobby Epstein said in a statement. “It is with shock and grief that we acknowledge the sudden death of Promise Isaac. On behalf of the Bold organization, we wish his wife, children and family strength and peace as they struggle to cope with his death.”
The league moved the club’s game originally scheduled for Saturday at Real Monarchs to Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Isaac scored three goals in 20 appearances for Austin this season. His last goal helped the Bold beat Rio Grande Valley FC and clinch the Copa Tejas Cup. His second-half substitution helps spark Austin in its attempted comeback in the U.S. Open Cup against MLS side Houston Dynamo.
Austin, which is 2-2-1 in its last five games, can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Thursday night on the road against El Paso Locomotive FC.
