Jason Martinson finished with two hits and two RBIs, including the game-winner, and the Round Rock Express scored four runs in the fourth inning to beat the New Orleans Baby Cakes 6-3 on the road Thursday night.
The shortstop doubled with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to drive in a pair runs and give the Express the lead for good.
Starter Anthony Bass (1-2, 4.53 ERA) lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Jimmy Reyes (2-1, 2.19) earned his second win of the year, after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Preston Claiborne earned his 12th save of the season.
Peter O’Brien hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to bring home Will Middlebrooks and give Round Rock an early lead. But New Orleans tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a single to right field and took the lead with a one-run single in the third.
Middlebrooks walked to begin the fourth inning and Ronald Guzman singled to center field one batter later before a one-out walk by Drew Stubbs. Martinson scored Middlebrooks and Guzman home when he sent a 2-2 pitch to deep left field.
Preston Beck singled in the next at-bat to extend the lead and Travis Snider drove n Martinson to extend the big inning with two outs.
Round Rock added an insurance run in the ninth inning when Drew Robinson singled to left center field and Martinson scored his second run of the game.
The Express and Baby Cakes wrap up their four-game series Friday at 7 p.m. when Round Rock righty Clayton Blackburn (1-0, 4.15) faces off with New Orleans’ Scott Copeland (4-7, 6.39).
Round Rock finishes its 11-game, 12-day road trip when it returns to Dell Diamond on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Memphis Redbirds come to town for the first of a four-game set.
