Bringing it to life: Locals produce fan flick based on 'Masters of the Universe' characters

The full-length trailer for the first of a trilogy of fan flicks slated for December

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">In the

1980s, little boys didn’t spend their time in front of their

Playstation 3 or on the Internet. Instead they liked watching

television shows like “Masters of the Universe,” a Mattel franchise

centered around characters such as He-Man and Skeletor on planet

Eternia, and She-ra: Princess of Power. For some boys, the love for

the franchise stayed with them through adulthood and now a local

film crew is making an independent, live action fan film based upon

the popular franchise.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Russell

Minton of Leander and John Carroll of Austin recently shared the

scoop on “Masters of the Universe: The Wizard of Stone Mountain,”

the first of a planned trilogy which they hope will be available

for free online viewing by spring or summer 2011.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: What

is “Masters of the Universe: The Wizard of Stone Mountain”

about?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A: It’s

the first live-action “Masters of the Universe” fan film to be

produced for the public. Based upon Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s

“Faust,” the Wizard of Stone Mountain is a fully-realized,

character-driven story. The story follows Malik, a minor character

from the film series, and fans are introduced to planet Eternia

from another perspective. Malik, the wizard of Stone Mountain and

main character, makes a bargain with a demon to wield great power

and win the respect of his people and the love of his life, Teela.

It is up to Malik’s friends to save him from himself when the demon

takes control.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: Who

are you playing, Mr. Minton? What is the character’s role in the

film?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A:

Kothos, a wizard. Kothos goes and causes trouble in an area called

the Fountain of Life, which is the title of the next film. Kothos

is an evil wizard with a goblin army.

(Carroll) This Fountain of Life is surrounded by this little fort

and there’s a huge battle sequence and all kinds of fun special

effects and then you have more heroes and more action. I’ve already

started writing the script for the second film but I don’t want to

give a lot away. The very end of the first film is going to bridge

into the next film. The end of the film is a teaser for the next

film which Russell (Minton) is in.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: When

is the film slated to come out and what is its target audience?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A: We’d

like to have principal photography completed by October, a short

trailer out in November and a full trailer out by Christmas. Our

goal is to have the flick out by next spring or summer. If we’re

lucky, we’ll have a premiere for Austin or maybe even in Leander

may be better. The film will be available free online for the

general public. The one thing that keeps us going are donations in

any amount. Although we’re not looking to make a profit, we rely on

donations for production costs.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: Any

other locals involved in the production of the film?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A: For

all the details, visit wizardofstonemountain.com. There are at

least 25 to 30 members not including extras. All are from the

greater Austin area, come from every level of profession, and have

done theater and film locally. We also have people who are on film

for the first time. It’s a very supportive and nurturing

environment in a relaxed atmosphere.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: What

local locations are being used for filming?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A: A

private ranch in Leander, Channel Austin which is the public access

channel in east Austin, Conservation Plaza in New Braunfels and

there is a possibility of a chapel location.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: What

is Minton’s role in Stone Mountain?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A:

(Minton) I work on the technical aspects of the first film. I help

on the production side, help get locations together, equipment,

props, I organize, fundraise, I’m the still photographer and I get

interviews together.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px;">

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Q: What

made you want to pursue a career in film, Mr. Minton?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A: I

accidentally fell into stage acting in college. After my first

minor role I began getting more roles and got really involved. I

did community theater after college but the life got really busy. I

did small things here and there. Two years ago, this month, a

friend of mine who I used to work with in college told me I should

I try out for a role and I did. I got my first paying role and now

almost 40 years later, here I am.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">I’ve

been a photographer for over 35 years. I’ve always appreciated

films. Once I started working on films I thought this is what I

want to do.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">Working

behind the camera is really art to me — it’s artistic even though

it’s technical. It’s like a painter’s palette. My dream is to be in

a Western someday.

Anything else you would like readers to know?

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">A:

(Minton) The Austin area is so very rich and very fortunate to have

the kind of talent and dedication that is out there of young actors

and artists.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">It’s

what’s remarkable about this area and being here is a rush for

me.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">If I had

a dream, I wish I could open a theater school in Leander.

"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">

(Carroll) We need your support whether it be theater or film. Take

a moment to check out wizardofstonemountain.com to find out how you

can get involved.
