Officers of the Cedar Park Police Department arrested 14 people for driving while intoxicated during the Fourth of July holiday period, police said.
The arrests were made during an expanded enforcement period from June 24 to July 5 as police implemented their version of a holiday Selected Traffic Enforcement Period or STEP program in an effort to curb drunk driving and keep local roads and highways safe.
"The Cedar Park Police Department increased patrol presence on local roadways to discourage and monitor for impaired driving violations as part of the ongoing regional STEP Initiative," said Tara Long, Cedar Park Police public information officer. "During that period, Cedar Park Patrol made 14 DWI arrests and a Cedar Park Patrol STEP Unit made one DUI minor arrest."
Cities and counties in Texas frequently use STEP periods of enforcement, usually during holidays when traffic is heaviest, to protect citizens from drunk drivers. Long said the next Cedar Park STEP initiative is scheduled from Aug. 18 to Sept. 3 during the Labor Day holiday period.
