Express down Grizzlies 5-0 in series opener

Round Rock opened its series with the Fresno Grizzlies with a 5-0 win Tuesday night at Dell Diamond.

Express lefty Framer Valdez (2-2, 2.22 ERA) pitched a gem in the win, giving up four hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts, just one shy of matching his career high, over seven innings of work.

Round Rock (63-44) trails the San Antonio Missions (68-40) by four and a half games in the PCL American Southern Division. Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are riding winning streaks of five or more games.

Derek Fisher blasted his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot, in the first inning. Drew Ferguson and Kyle Tucker drove in a run apiece in the first innings to help Round Rock jump out to a three-run lead.

Jack Mayfield hit a solo home run to center in the fifth and Ferguson picked up his second RBI of the contest with an RBI double.

Colin McKee and Brendan McCurry combined for three strikeouts over the next two scoreless innings to preserve the win.

The Express and Grizzlies continue their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Round Rock starter Kent Emanuel (5-1, 4.26) is scheduled to face Fresno RHP Wil Crowe (0-0, 2.79).
