A monument honoring Central Texas families who have lost loved ones to military service is planned to be placed at Cedar Park Veterans Memorial Park, Saturday, Sept. 23.
The American Legion Post 911 in Cedar Park will be hosting the dedication ceremony Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Cedar Park Veterans Memorial Park, 2525 West New Hope Road. The event is free and open to the public.
The monument is part of an effort by the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Gold Star Families Foundation to build one such monument in each of the 50 states. The monument in Cedar Park will be the first Gold Star Monument in Texas.
A Gold Star Family is one who has lost an immediate family member to duty in the U.S. armed forces.
The dedication ceremony will include Gold Star family recognition, unveiling of the monument, a wreath laying ceremony and a flyover by the Texas National Guard. Multiple Gold Star families will participate as well as the WilCo Blue Star Mothers, a number of veteran service organizations, and federal, state and locally elected officials.
Remarks will be delivered by Woody Williams, the last surviving United States Marine Corps WWII veteran to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
