Leander ISD is offering free breakfast and lunch to children under 18 through the month of June as part of the No Cost Summer Meals event.

The event officially began on Monday, June 10, but a kick-off party celebrating the program will take place Thursday, June 13 at Running Brushy Middle School in Cedar Park. The party will feature an ‘Eat The Alphabet’ showcase, where children can try foods starting with each letter of the alphabet, and participate in other activities like paper airplane races.
The No Cost Summer Meals Program, provided in partnership with Southwest Foodservice Excellence, will run through June and early July, but the exact dates differ depending on the location. For example, the meals will be offered from June 10 to July 26 at Running Brushy Middle School, while at Reed Elementary School, the event will run from June 12-22 and from July 8-18.
The other location hosting is Twin Lakes Fellowship, and it will offer meals from June 10 to July 26.
The meals come from surplus produce provided by the Department of Defense, said Robin Plett, Assistant General Manager of Child Nutrition Services for Southwest Foods Excellence. That produce, Plett said, comes from local Texas growers.
“We’re really hoping to blow the doors off on this program,” Plett said.
The meals will consist of a combination of fruit, vegetables, meat, grains, and milk. Adults who would like to partake will have to pay $4, and meals cannot be eaten outside of the event grounds.
But free meals aren’t the only thing offered during the event. Throughout the event period, various activities will take place, including a gardening event on June 21 where Pleasant Hill Elementary Gardening Mentor Francine Erikson will teach about okra and planting.
Other activities, which will all take place at Running Brushy Middle School, include:
Every Wednesday, Summer Reading book giveaway and activities.
June 28, children will learn a recipe using fresh produce.
July 3, Fourth of July Celebration
July 12, Farmers in Our Community event, with farmer’s market tasting bar.
July 19, Physical Fitness event with games and activities
July 26, End of Summer Celebration with games and activities
For both Runny Brushy Middle School and Twin Lakes Fellowship, meals will not be available on July 4 and July 5.
At Running Brushy Middle School and Twin Lakes Fellowship breakfast is offered from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m. For Reed Elementary School, breakfast runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. with lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
