All the local wrestling will come together the week before Christmas for the Hill Country Invitational Saturday morning at Vista Ridge High School.
All six LISD schools will participate and will be joined by SA Reagan, SA Churchill, Dripping Springs, Austin Bowie, SA Roosevelt, Lake Travis, LBJ, MacArthur, Rockwell and New Braunfels. Wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m. and, for the individual competition, it will be a 10-man scramble format.
This will be the first year the event will feature girls wrestling. All the girls will be placed in the round robin bracket and will have as many matches as their brackets allow. The Rangers had the most success on the girls’ side last year, sending Faith Villarreal, Alena Clavijo, Jillian Walker to the state tournament last year.
Each wrestler will get five matches regardless of skill level. The team competition will be a 16-team scramble with teams divided into four pools before a championship bracket to end the tournament.
The No. 3 Vandegrift boys’ team is still undefeated this year, winning the Capitol City and the Georgetown Throwdown tournaments. The Vipers are 15-0 in duals as well after beating Shoemaker, East View, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights and Ellison at the Ellison duals on Tuesday.
Leander got some revenge on Georgetown last Wednesday, who beat the Lions in the semifinals at the Georgetown Throwdown. They continued their hot streak with wins against McNeil and Shoemaker.
