The UIL Wrestling State Tournament begins Friday at the Berry Center in Cypress.
The first round of the boys’ double elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Friday while the girls’ tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. The boys’ championship quarterfinals start at 1:30 p.m. and the girls’ begin at 4 p.m.
Saturday’s competition begins with the boys’ championship semifinals at 8:30 a.m. and the girls’ start at 10:30 a.m.
The title matches for both 5A and 6A boys and girls are at 4:45 on Saturday afternoon.
Three of the six Cedar Park boys that qualified are ranked: No. 7 Levi Bell, No. 18 Chigozie Onyia, an alternate at 182-pounds, and No. 12 Jacob Munoz. Bell is making his second straight trip to the state tournament after wrestling on a broken ankle a year ago.
All four Rouse wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament are ranked. In the 160-pound weight class, Tanner Looney is the highest ranked Raider wrestler at No. 3.
Leander’s only participant, junior John Geiger, is ranked No. 6 at 120 pounds.
Vandegrift won the regional title for the third year in a row this year. All but one Viper is ranked entering the state tournament: No. 16 Remy Jacops, No. 2 Noah Gochberg, No. 4 Luke Sloan, No. 17 Grant Riddle and No. 14 Dakota Kleffner.
Vista Ridge senior Kelby Davis’ career almost ended after a gruesome leg injury after his sophomore season, but the No. 4 wrestler at 195-pounds is at the state tournament for the second year in a row.
In the girls’ division, Vista Ridge senior Alena Clavijo is the highest ranked local at the meet at No. 11 at 128-pounds, while Rouse junior Violet Hall is No. 12 in the 110-weight division. Cedar Park sophomore Cassidy King, an alternate in the 102-pound weight class, is No. 13 in the state.
