Playoff positions will be determined as the softball and baseball regular seasons will come to a close in the coming days.

Leander, Vista Ridge, and Vandegrift each wrap up their regular seasons with three-game sets this weekend. Cedar Park and Rouse have four games left in the next two weeks and are both sitting in playoff positions.

The Lions were swept by Westlake last week and have been eliminated from postseason contention. The Rangers and Vipers are tied for third place in the district standings at 9-6 overall.

Vista Ridge has three games against Westlake, which is two games behind them in the playoff race. Vandegrift faces district-leading Lake Travis, which has lost one district game all season, in a three-game set.

According to Vandegrift baseball coach Allen McGee, any win against Lake Travis this week will ensure a first-ever trip to the postseason for the Vipers. Should Lake Travis sweep the Vipers, McGee said there are two other scenarios that could see Vandegrift making the postseason. In one, Vista Ridge would need to beat Westlake twice this week, sending both the Rangers and the Vipers to the playoffs. In the other, Westlake would need to sweep Vista Ridge this week, with the Chaparrals and Vipers making the playoffs and Vista Ridge sitting out the postseason.

“We can only control one of those situations so that’s what we are concerning ourselves with this week,” said McGee, adding, “We have had the best year in Viper Baseball history but (we) can’t worry about that yet until we handle our business this last week in the regular season. This senior class has been great leading both on and off the baseball field. I have all the confidence in the world they will continue that trend this week.”

On the softball field, Vista Ridge and Rouse have locked up playoff spots, while Cedar Park, Leander, and Vandegrift missed out on the playoffs.

The Lady Raiders are the only local team playing in town as they host Westlake in the regular season finale on Friday night.

It’s still early in the season for the Express, but they return home from a seven-game road trip to host Omaha Storm Chasers on Thursday and Friday and the Iowa Cubs from Saturday through next Tuesday.
