New Leander ACC campus adds opportunities for LISD students

Posted

Leander ISD is fortunate to have dedicated partners in the education of our children.

Businesses, community non-profits and faith-based organizations all work with us to ensure bright futures for every student. We have had a terrific and mutually beneficial relationship with Austin Community College for many years, and this week, I was excited to join fellow educators in celebrating the opening of the ACC San Gabriel campus in Leander.

In the last school year, nearly 1,300 LISD students enrolled in dual credit courses. Whether it is opportunities for tuition savings or giving students the confidence to know they can do college-level work, this partnership plays a pivotal role in Leander ISD accomplishing its vision to engage, inspire and achieve for lifelong success.

We are always looking to improve our direct-to-college numbers, and the Leander campus provides a significant means to strengthen our partnership and support a college-going culture.

In fact, 20 percent of our students go to a two-year school after high school, the majority of those going to ACC. LISD strives to continuously improve and to provide more opportunities for our students before and after graduation.

Our Counseling Services department does a fantastic job in meeting with every high school student, ninth through 12th grade, at least once each year. In those meetings, our counselors help students identify their career and post-secondary goals.

With those goals identified, the counselors are able to spell out the education requirements needed to achieve defined aspirations, and for many of our students, ACC plays into that equation.

Thank you once again to the leadership of ACC and our community leaders for all of your hard work in bringing this new campus to fruition and for making the next step in our students’ educational journey that much more accessible. I am excited to see how this new campus will continue to build pathways to higher education and future opportunities for our students.
