No. 3 Texas opened the Shocker Volleyball Classic with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18) win over No. 13 BYU on Friday night.
Logan Eggleston and Micaya White led the charge combining for 46 kills and 25 digs.
Eggleston finished with a personal best 25 kills on .367 hitting with 11 digs, one ace and one block. White had a season-high 21 kills on .347hitting, her third double-double of the season with 14 digs to go along with four blocks and four aces.
"They came out really strong in set one and we knew that was going to happen," Eggleston said. "We came back even stronger in the rest of the game and we knew they were going to play hard and we had to play harder."
Sophomore libero Sydney Peterson had a season-best 19 digs for the Longhorns and added six assists and an ace. Sophomore setter Jhenna Gabriel had 49 assists and the team had .329 hitting.
The Cougars took the first set 25-23, but the Longhorns rebounded with 21 kills and .396 hitting in the second set to even the match.
Texas took advantage of 17 BYU errors over the next two sets to pick up their fourth win of the season.
"That game we were really steady and they did a lot of great things, but we did a lot of great things," White said. "We just had a steady demeanor and, overall, just played really good. They had a smaller setter and we just tried to use that to our advantage."
Texas continues to tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. when it takes on tournament host Wichita State.
"We've done a better job of forgetting the last play and moving on and focusing on doing all of our jobs individually," Eggelston said.
