Toluca downs Santos Laguna in friendly at Dell Diamond

Mexican professional soccer returned to Dell Diamond for the fifth year in a row on Sunday.

Toluca downed Santos Laguna 4-2 in penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation. It was a rematch of the yearly Liga MX friendly in Round Rock when the two teams met in 2017 and Toluca also won in penalties after a tied regulation period.

Despite beginning soon after the Women’s World Cup Final in which the United States won their fourth world title and just hours before the Gold Cup final where the U.S.  lost to arch-rival Mexico, 5,153 people turned out for the afternoon match.

Nearly 8,000 fans turned out when the two met in 2017, while the most fans to show up for a Mexican Soccer field at Dell Diamond was 13,018 watched Chivas and Tigres faced off last October.

Toluca stormed out of the gate on Sunday, and Alexis Canelo was in the right place at the right time to give them a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the match.

Santos Laguna started pushing the pace as the first half went on, and Matheus Doria jumped on a cross to level the game with a close-range smash just a few minutes before the halftime break.

After a sleepy second half, Toluca made its first three penalties and four oft he five they attempted to win for the second time in as many games in Round Rock.
