Texas blood donation center is in “critical shortage” of blood

Need for blood is anticipated to continue through Labor Day weekend

In a normal day, We Are Blood, a Texas non-profit blood donation center, needs about 200 donors a day to supply enough blood to keep hospitals in its 10-county area stocked for trauma.

Now after a lean summer with school starting, Labor Day weekend approaching and Hurricane Harvey hitting Texas this weekend, We Are Blood is experiencing a “critical shortage” of O Negative and O Positive blood. Officials are calling upon the Central Texas community to help them resupply their blood bank.

“In addition to normal challenges of the summer and Labor day, we’ve had some major traumas, and one major transfusion today that has depleted our Type O blood,” said Marshall Cothran, CEO of We Are Blood. “With the hurricane approaching, not only is our need magnified, we need to stock up for Labor Day too, so we can provide for our communities and we want to be in a position to help our closest neighbors on the Gulf Coast as well.”

Some area hospitals are on backorder for blood and are in need of a resupply, Cothran said.

O Negative and O Positive blood are most important due to their universal tendencies. O Negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused into any patient. O Positive blood is the most common blood type, which means many patients can receive it.

Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 115 pounds.

We Are Blood is encouraging all eligible donors—even if they are unsure of their blood type—to visit one of three We Are Blood donation locations or an upcoming mobile drive as soon as possible.

“It’s safe to say, if people respond and come in they will be needed,” Cothran said.

As a thank you gift, all donors who donate, or attempt to donate at any We Are Blood donor center or mobile drive will receive one free P. Terry’s milkshake voucher now through August 28.

For more information, to book an appointment at any of the three donation locations, or to view the mobile drive schedule, visit www.weareblood.org.

“We’ve got a great community and they always step up,” Cothran said. “We just want to let our hospitals know we can count on Central Texans to step up and help replenish their blood supply."
