The Williamson County Commissioners Court vote Sept. 17 to pay for the funeral of a Leander veteran who died with no known family members and is inviting the public to attend his funeral this Thursday in Cedar Park.
Mark Lyle Walker, 58, died on Aug. 25 and was subsequently listed as an "unaccompanied veteran" when no known family members could be located.
He served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, according to the obituary by Beck Funeral Home. The service on Thursday will be held 9 a.m. at the funeral home, which is located at 1700 E. Whitestone in Cedar Park.
A burial with full military honors will happen that same day at 11 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
“There are a lot of things that we do that are important, but I’m going to take time off on that day,” Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell said during the commissioners court meeting on Sept. 17. “I’m going to go to a funeral of a man I do not know, but a man who served our nation faithfully. Following that, I will go to the burial because I believe that everyone who dies in Williamson County deserves someone to walk with them to that very last place.”
Walker lived with a friend “who was gracious to take him in" prior to his death, according to Gravell.
As Mr. Walker died with no known family, the funeral is being paid for by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10427 of Leander and Beck Funeral Home. Williamson County is contributing the standard $300 allotted for indigent burials.
“VFW Post 10427 is pleased to work with Williamson County to honor Mr. Walker’s service to our country,” said Mitch Fuller, commander of VFW Post 10427.
