Leander Independent School District will suspend all normal school operations through April 5, per a notice on the district website.

The Williamson County and Cities Health District said there are no cases in the county as of March 3.

The Leander Independent School District spent a large portion of last week’s meeting discussing local policy reviews and updates, specifically regarding student policies. At the Feb. 27 meeting, the board may take action to officially adopt the policy updates.  more

The Leander ISD Board of Trustees will review attendance zones, course catalogs and estimated additional staff positions  for the 2020-21 school year at an agenda review meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20. As the board recently changed its operating procedures, no decisions will be made until the regular meeting on Feb. 27.   

Leander ISD celebrated hosting Battle of the Bluebonnets for 15 years on Feb. 13 at Mason Elementary School, with this year’s round of the elementary literary event This year’s Master of Ceremonies was Leander ISD Superintendent Dr. Bruce Gearing. Leander ISD Board President Trish Bode was also in attendance.  more

The Leander Independent School District is currently seeking input from the community via a survey regarding elementary attendance zones for the 2021-22 school year. 

The district said the survey question is “What considerations are important to you for Leander ISD to include in a charter used to create and adopt new elementary school attendance zones for the 2021-22 school year?” 

The submission window for the elementary zoning survey will close Tuesday, Feb. 11. The survey can be found here under the Community Feedback tab. 


Under the Communicable Diseases tab on the Leander Independent School District Health Services Department web page, the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been added to the list.

LISD said the district is monitoring developments regarding the outbreak of the potentially-deadly respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan City, China in December 2019.

The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a full-day prekindergarten plan for eligible students with a 5-1 vote. Vice President Aaron Johnson and Trustees Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, Jim MacKay, Paw Waggoner and Elexis Grimes voting yes while Trustee Grace Barber-Jordan voted no and President Trish Bode abstained. more

The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees discussed the creation of a community-accountability system and unveiled their new board operating procedures at a meeting on Jan. 16. 


The bell schedule and triple-tier bus system will be discussed by the Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees at their meeting on Thursday. 


“You might think this is just a regular pep rally or synergy rally, but actually it’s not,” Reed Elementary Principal Paige Collier said. “It’s extra special today. I have been keeping a little secret.” 

Collier turned students’ groans into cheers when it was announced that Reed Elementary School had received a Lighthouse Certification, a highly-regarded standard recognizing schools that have produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes as well as impacted staff, students, parents and the greater community. 


The Leander Independent School District is currently conducting a community survey to gauge the interest and plan for the expansion of pre-kindergarten from a half-day to a full-day curriculum for eligible 4-year-olds, to begin in the 2020-21 school year, according to the district website. The survey will also gauge the interest in possibly offering a half-day pre-school program for eligible 3-year-olds.  


The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing regarding the School FIRST annual report at 6:15 p.m. Dec. 12 at 1900 Cougar Country Dr., Cedar Park. 


Rouse High School Freshman Ava Mongoven addressed the Leander Independent School District Board about gun violence at last week’s meeting. 

“Our school’s culture has been shifted from being one of learning and growth to being underlined with fear and intimidation of gun violence,” Mongoven said. “Growing up in a generation of school shootings is a complete nightmare.” 

Mongoven said she does not know any student that feels safe in school. 


The Leander Independent School District began teaching their chosen human sexuality curriculum, Austin LifeGuard (ALG), in October. LISD Communications Coordinator Matt Mitchell said the district has used the same program for at least 13 years. 

Review of the human sexuality curriculum occurs every three years through the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), for grades 7, 8 and 9. 

“SHAC looks at several different curriculums noting the requirements from the state and determines which curriculum to recommend for use in LISD,” Mitchell said. 

In 2018, the LISD SHAC reviewed the ALG, Big Decisions and Scott and White curriculums. Ultimately, the subcommittee recommended that LISD continue their partnership with ALG, at a cost of $35,000. The LISD School Board at the time, approved the recommendation.
