Austin Elite Rugby returning to Round Rock Multipurpose Complex

The 2020 Major League Rugby season will begin in February

Austin Elite Rugby on Wednesday announced that the team would be returning to the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex for the 2020 Major League Rugby Season.

"We are excited to be returning to the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in 2020 and reinvigorating family-friendly, sports entertainment events for Central Texas residents," Elite Rugby Management President Richard Osborn said in a press release. "Our team was very disciplined and dedicated to modeling data for venue locations for the upcoming season and Round Rock Multipurpose Complex was best suited for fan engagement, sponsorship activation and broadcast value."

Austin Elite Rugby was an inaugural member of MLR and played its first season at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex before playing the majority of last season at Dell Diamond. They played one home game at Toyota Field in San Antonio.

Round Rock Multipurpose Complex is a 60-acre complex and features a World Rugby regulation championship turf field that includes permanent seating with shade structures and a VIP lounge.

Last season was a struggle for Austin Elite, finishing without a win and coming in ninth overall in MLR.

"Our purpose was reevaluated in the offseason and we have come to understand and respect the need to grow the sport at the grassroots level," Austin Elite Director of Rugby Todd Clever said. "We believe that our purpose is to be the epicenter of rugby in Central Texas, while fostering grassroots growth and creating high-performance pathways for players and our location is core to that purpose."

Clever was hired as the new Director of Rugby position in May and replaces former CEO/GM Thierry Daupin, who stepped down in a concurrent move.

Clever is the most capped player in U.S. rugby union history and was the captain of the USA Eagle national rugby union team. He signed as a co-owner and player with Austin Elite in 2016 and helped the Austin Huns win the D1 Club National Championship in 2017.

The 2020 MLR season begins in February and will last 17 weeks. Austin Elite Rugby announced plans to add some limited-edition items for season ticket holders after season ticket plans go on sale on Aug. 26.
