A pair of freshmen stole the show for the Cedar Park track team at the District 19-5A track meet last week
Kaitlyn Childress won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:12.06 and the 3200-meter run finishing in 11:18.99 while Megan Wilcox, won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.92 and was part of the 4x100-meter relay that finished in second place.
“It was a good day for us to start the process,” Cedar Park track coach Jason Grennier said. “We’re really young. Most of the girls are freshmen and sophomores so it was a good start.”
For Rouse, Taye Biel had an outstanding day. He won the district title in the 4x100-meter relay and 100-meter dash, setting a new school record with a time of 10.75 seconds in the sprint. He also qualified for the area meet with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Other district champions for the Raiders include Abigail Bendle winning double goal in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, Abi Toops winning the high jump and Annabelle Ninomiya taking the top spot in the long jump.
Rouse senior Danny Madrid finished the 800-meter run in 2:00.13 to beat Cedar Park junior Alden Yi by .01 of a second and win the district title.
The Rouse girls’ 4x200-meter relay took second place with a time of 1:48.08.
Cedar Park also qualified for the event. Grennier said with all the adversity that group has been through this year, it was good to see them moving on.
“Our girls 4x200-meter relay has had a bunch of different combinations,” Grennier said. “There was a point where we weren’t even sure if we were going to run a 4x200-meter relay. They ended up getting third. That was huge. Four girls that just refused to get up.”
Elsewhere for the Timberwolves, Desmond Brink finished the 200-meter dash in 22.65 to lift the district title and Travian Holst won gold medals in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. Logan Mayou won a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 11.5 inches.
The area meet will be on Apr. 19 and 20 from Cub Stadium in Bryan.
“All the girls that move forward, as long as they’re having meets, our expectation is for them to keep running,” Grennier said. “The people that won have a good shot, but everybody that qualified has a good chance.”
