City of Leander reports wastewater treatment plant incident

The City of Leander reported an operational incident at its Leander 2243 Wastewater Treatment Plant after an interruption in the plant's aeration system resulted in partially treated wastewater entering Brushy Creek on July 24-25.

According to the city, the problem was caused by a tripped electrical breaker in the blower building, likely due to a power fluctuation. Full aeration was restored the following morning, and the facility has since returned to normal operations.

The City notified the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality through its 24-hour hotline and submitted a formal noncompliance report. Officials said enhanced monitoring is underway every two hours, and water quality is being reviewed at multiple locations along Brushy Creek.

The city said it reported no observed impacts to aquatic life and said the plant is currently operating within TCEQ permit limits. Some monitoring results for the July 29 reporting period could reflect temporary exceedances because they include a 24-hour composite sample collected during the incident. The city has also redirected some wastewater flows to a regional treatment facility to support recovery.
